There is a lot of talk and writing in this space about how to read a picture and decipher what is real and fake. What I’d like to do is lay out my thoughts on what I see in a picture and what I feel I should or shouldn’t see.
In the past, I have used the same method for reading a painting. I took a photograph and I read the name, and I read the title of the painting. The reason I am saying this is because the method is not really scientific enough. There is a lot of guess work involved.
I’m not saying that I’m a bad reader. I just don’t think you should do it. I also don’t think you should read what you see in a photograph. There is no scientific way to go about it other than to take a photograph yourself and look at it.
I think we can agree on that. The problem, though, is that you don’t have to take a photograph, you can just read the title of a painting! The reason this method works is because your brain is not working hard to read a name or a title.
In Deathloop, you are presented with a blank page that you can’t see in your head. It may have been taken out of context, but it clearly shows everything you see in the photo. Therefore, no matter how you look at it, you will never see it in your head. This is the only way to look at a photo in your head.
In fact, it is very difficult to look at a painting and not see something on it that you need to see. Because if you do not, you will most certainly get distracted. This is a very simple example of a brain “bug”. It’s a common mistake that people make and it is actually very common. But when we look at a painting, it is very easy to look at it and not see anything.
The final nail in the coffin is that these two-dimensional paintings are the only ones that can be seen. You will never see a painting that is two dimensions on one level. The painting is just a two-dimensional image. In reality, you will see everything in the picture, but you will be distracted by everything else.
There are two reasons why an artist should make the painting a two-dimensional image: 1) It allows the viewer to see everything. 2) It keeps everything in focus. Two-dimensional paintings should be used to show what a painting looks like, but you can’t see what’s on the opposite side of the painting.
One of the reasons artists make paintings 2D is to convey what you see. 2D paintings do that by making most of the picture on one side and the background on the other side, allowing the viewer to focus their attention on the important details, not on the background.
If you have a good eye, then a good eye is the most important tool in any drawing. It’s only the viewer who is limited.
