I can’t tell you how many people at my job have expressed interest in me while I’ve been out of work. Many of them have expressed interest in me with a specific topic. For example, I’ve been asked about my mental health. This is a topic I’ve been passionate about for a long time. I’ve written a number of articles on it and spoken at talks.
Mental health is a very difficult topic to discuss, so it is very important to understand what youre talking about and when youre talking about it.
You know how I said you have to understand the topic to discuss it? Well, the same holds true for mental health. I think it goes back to the fact that people who suffer from this condition can be very misinformed about it. As you would be, and I know I often am.
Mental health is a real thing. The problem is that so many people take it for granted and think that they are all mentally healthy and happy. I actually think that is a bit harmful. The reality is that people who suffer from this condition have a very real risk to them because of the stigma that surrounds it. Most people who suffer from mental health issues don’t know what they are and they have experienced it. To them, it feels like “a normal condition”.
It’s a stigma that affects a LOT of people but especially professionals who are well known for their mental health work. I was speaking with a social worker at a local hospital and her mind boggled at how many of the people who were there had mental health issues and had never told anyone. She said that they were a bit worried about their safety and that it would be tough to get an appointment with someone who works there.
Its a big topic. You see, mental health is a very complex issue and it’s a huge topic on social media, in media, and with our own society. It’s a topic that people are constantly talking about because they feel like they don’t have an easy way to talk about it.
I really think the biggest problem is that while there are many ways to talk about mental health, people often don’t know how to talk about it. A lot of people think that someone who is mentally ill is some type of demon or monster, but it’s not that way. It’s just that they don’t know how to ask for help, so they don’t know where to start.
While mental health issues are often attributed to a person’s brain, its more accurate to say that depression and anxiety are caused by an imbalance of the chemicals in the body. If we arent careful, its extremely easy to get in the habit of treating people like numbers we are just looking at. This is especially true when we think that people who are mentally ill are some kind of monster or evil person.
Not only do most individuals struggle with mental health issues, but the very people that are supposed to be our allies are the very ones that are the worst at protecting us. We are in danger of becoming the very people we are trying to help.
This is a perfect example of the kind of thing that you do with a mental illness when you don’t have a real understanding of the person you’re trying to help. We are the ones who make the laws, we are the ones who sit in judgement, we are the ones who put people in jail, we are the ones who try to get people better. Instead of helping us, we are just being mean to us.
