I often hear that there are “three levels of self-awareness.” Two of them are the self-awareness of the body and the self-awareness of the mind. The main reason I see this is that we have a lot of self-awareness if we use our body to do a task, and this is what we usually do when we “think” about it.
I think this is partially true because there’s an interesting case where people go through life with a lot of self-awareness, but then it goes down when they lose that awareness. People with diabetes often have a lot of self-awareness, but the awareness goes away when they’re put on insulin. People with Alzheimer’s also have a lot of self-awareness, but they can lose it when they go to a nursing home.
Self-awareness is different than self-knowledge. Self-knowledge is information about yourself that you can use to make decisions in the future. Self-awareness is about your actions, your decisions, your emotions.
I don’t know about you, but I like to know what’s going on inside my body before I get sick. I like to know what the next dose is going to be. I like to know if I’m going to get a headache. I like to know if I’m going to feel a bit woozy. I like to know if I’m going to get a sore throat.
It’s no surprise that the field of medicine has been obsessed with the idea of self-awareness for centuries. Because if we are aware of our bodies and our actions, how can we not be aware of ourselves? In fact, many of the earliest medical practices (like chloroform) relied on this idea. The ancients were not only aware of their own inner workings, they were also aware of their external bodies.
The idea of self-awareness, the concept of self-awareness, came with the dawn of humanity. The term self-awareness is a modern medical term derived from the Greek “soma”, meaning “self”, and “akousin”, meaning “to be aware of”. This was the time humans were developing consciousness for the first time.

In the 19th century, the term self-awareness was used to refer to the ability to see who you are. It’s derived from the word self, meaning self, and ou, meaning to see. It was a popular notion that the first person to develop self-awareness was a man named William James.
It is now acknowledged that the ability to see ourselves as we truly are, to recognize our personal self, is a core ability of all humans.
The term esophagia was originally used to describe the condition of the esophagus, as a condition where we couldn’t eat properly, due to the pressure of the stomach. It was later used as a medical term as the stomach is the organ that allows the esophagus to be properly fed.
